Balwant Gargi

Balwant Gargi (04.12.1916-21.04.2003) a Punjabi playwright was born to Pooni Chandra and Shib Chandra in village Sehna, district Bathinda. He was married to Ginni Henry but was divorced and had two children.

He started his career at Fun Radio Station in Lahore (1944-1946). Later on he joined as Professor of Drama at University of Washington, Seattle, USA from 1964-1966. He had been a Professor of Indian Theatre at Panjab University, Chandigarh (1968-1977).  He had also been Emeritus producer of Doordarshan and Aakashwani (1980-1983).

Theatre and creative writing were his passion. He was a man of theatre and gave new direction to Punjabi Theatre. His plays explore the intericacies of human mind. The dialogues in his scripts are bold enough to express the hidden emotions of the characters. He had deep understanding of Indian Myths and gives them new meaning in his writings. He stands for the free man and sometimes crosses the social barriers in his works.

He was awarded Shiromani Punjabi Sahitkar Award by Language Department PunjabSahitya Academy Award was given to him for his research work Rang Manch (1962). He was also conferred Padam Shri (1973) by Indian Government,  besides many other awards by different forums.
