Gurbaksh Singh Preetlari (S.)

S. Gurbaksh Singh Preetlari (26.04.1895-20.8.1977) a Punjabi writer was born to Malni and Pashora Singh in Sialkot, Pakistan. He was married to Jagjit Kaur.

He completed engineering from Roorkee Engineering College in 1918 and joined Indian Army as engineer and was despatched to Baghdad. Later he joined Michigan University for higher studies in Civil engineering. He also served Indian Railways as an engineer from 1925-1932. He also experimented Agriculture with machinery.

He dreamt of a society in which all habitats would love each other irrespective of caste, creed or religion. He depreciated the superstitions and irrational beliefs. He started a monthly literary magazine, Preet Lari in 1933 to propagate his vision of life. The magazine caught the imagination of middle class and gave them purpose of life. Gurbaksh Singh's poetic prose brought gross change in the vision of life of Punjabis. He also envisioned and built Preet Nagar, a town of his dreams, which became the centre of literary activities.

He introduced a new style in Punjabi prose which motivates the reader to live happy balanced life.

Language Department Punjab awarded him Sarvotam Puraskar (1951). Soviet Land Nehru Award (1972) was also awarded to him.
