Surjit Patar (14.01.1945) a Punjabi Poet, writer was born to Gurbaksh Kaur and Harbhajan Singh in village Pattar kalan district Jalandhar. He is married to Bhupinder Kaur.
He did his graduation from Randhir College, Kapurthala and masters from Punjabi University, Patiala. He got Ph.D for his research on ‘Transformation of Folklore in Guru Nanak Vani’ from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.
He started his career as an associate Professor. He retired as a Professor of Language and Culture Department in Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana. He has served as president of Punjabi Sahit Akademi, Ludhiana. Now he is the chairperson of Punjab Art Council, Chandigarh.
He was awarded by Punjab Sahit Akademi, Chandigarh in 1980. He got ‘Gyani Gurmukh Singh Musafir Poetry Award’ by Language department, Punjab, Patiala in 1980 for his work ‘Hawa Vich Likhe Harf’. He was awarded ‘Kartar Singh Dhaliwal’ Award by Punjabi Sahit Akademi, Ludhiana in 1985. He was also awarded by Bhartiya Sahit Akademi, New Delhi in 1993 for ‘Hanere Vich Sulgadi Varanmala’. ‘Pichle Dahake Da Punjabi Shayar’ was also bestowed on him by Punjabi Akademi, Delhi in 1995. He also got ‘Shiromni Punjabi Kavi’ Award by Language department, Punjab, Patiala in 1997, besides numerous other awards by different Cultural and literary forums.
