Dalip Kaur Tiwana
Dalip Kaur Tiwana (02.05.1932), a Punjabi writer was born to Chand Kaur and Kaka Singh in village Rabbon Uchi, District Ludhiana. She is married to Bhupinder Singh.
She did Ph.D and joined Punjabi University, Patiala as a lecturer in Punjabi. She retired as a professor from the same University in 1952. Now she is getting life fellowship from Punjabi University. She had a distinguished academic career. She got first class first in M.A. and was the first woman in the region to get the Ph.D degree from the Panjab University, Chandigarh.
She has a deep understanding of the feudal life of Punjab and stands for the deprived and downtrodden labourers. She portrays the female characters who live rural life with suppressed emotions. The use of Indian mythology in her fiction is the strength of her writings. Her writings have been translated into Hindi, English and other Indian/foreign languages.
She got Sahitya Akademi Award (1971) for her novel 'Eh Hamara Jiwna'. Language Department Punjab awarded her Shiromani Punjab Sahitkar Award (1987) and Punjabi Sahit Akademi Ludhiana gave her Kartar Singh Dhaliwal Award (1990). K.K. Birla Foundation also awarded her 'Sarswati Sanman' (2001) for her novel 'Katha Kaho Urvashi". She has been conferred 'Padam Shri' by Government of India in 2004 which she returned in 2015 against the increasing intolerance in the country. GNDU Amritsar awarded her honorary D.Lit in 2011, besides many other prestigious awards by numerous literary forums.
