The Making of the Middle Classes in the Punjab (1849-1947), delineates the broad contours of social formation and its crystallization under the colonial dispensation. The social and cultural transformation in the colonial Punjab is best articulated and manifested through the emergence, growth and rise of the middle classes which vibrated through diverse fields and impacted all areas of the Punjabi society. The Present study, situated in a broad historical context, would help the reader and the researcher to map out as well as feel about the potentialities and the callings of the Punjabis and their proactive and creative encounter in a colonial situation.
