Shiv Kumar Batalvi (08.10.1937-07.05.1973) a Punjabi Poet was born to Shanti Devi and Krishnan Gopal in Bada Pind Lahotia, District Sialkot, Pakistan. Later his family settled in Batala, Gurdaspur, India. He was married to Aruna.
He did Matric from Salvation Army High school, Batala in 1953. He did F.Sc, but lost interest in studies. He joined revenue department as a Patwari, but his poetic mind was unfit for this job and he resigned. Later on he joined State Bank of India as a PRO, but he never took the job seriously and was more absorbed in poetic reverie.
His poetry depicts the suffering of the lover who is separated from his beloved. His imagery relates to the common things prevalent in our life, but his usage of images is unique and novel. He gets inspiration from our classical literature, Gurbani and folk literature. He gives new meaning to the old myths. He was a poet of sadness and sang his poems in his soft voice in such a way that countless youngsters became his fan.
He was awarded by Language Department Punjab, Patiala for his work 'Pirha Da Paraga' and also for ' Atte Diyan Chidiyan'. He also got Sahitya Akademi Award for his epic 'Loona' (1963). .
