In this book Chahal places the genetic modification issues in an ecosystem context. She is concerned not just about genes altered by new technologies, nor about what such genes do in individual plants or animals on the farm or in markets, but also about what the spillover may be on landscapes, on surrounding environmental processes vital to life. Although these issues have sometimes been addressed by those in the West, largely with concerns about genes escaping from genetically engineered plants or animals and spilling over into wild spices, the larger suite of issues here have not figured much in the contemporary debates on genetic bioethics. Chahal ranges widely over these issues, tending to start with medical bioethics and then to proceed to the wider risks to natural environments. Along the way, she addresses the “playing God” question, uncertainly in risks, human superiority, human’s as co-creators with God, environmental violence, and environmental restoration.
