Sarmukh Singh Amol (Principal) (06.01.1908-07.09.1992) a Punjabi writer and academician was born to Inder Kaur and Jodh Singh in Lahore. He was married to Partap Kaur.

He couldn’t see his father as he expired about a month before his birth. Therefore he was brought up at orphanage in Gujranwala and Amritsar. Since his father was a known Sikh scholar and poet, he inherited the literary genes and started writing poems in Punjabi newspapers at very young age. He passed Gyani in 1924 and matriculation from Khalsa School, Amritsar in 1926. He joined SSSS Khalsa School as a teacher in 1929 and also started a private academy for the teaching of Gyani in the same year. His venture of academy i.e. Guru Ramdas Gyani College, Amritsar was successful and large number of students benefitted from it. It also became a centre of literary activities in the city and many budding writers blossomed under his guidance and excelled in Punjabi literary world. He quit the school job in 1934 and devoted his full time to Gyani College. He also started a literary magazine ‘Likhari’ in 1934. He also did M.A. Punjabi in 1952 and joined Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar in 1952 as a lecturer.

His writings include fiction and prose. He also edited and evaluated works of medieval poets. He had always been a sympathetic evaluator of his contemporary writers and he blessed and helped many budding writers to polish their writings.

He was awarded by Language Department Punjab, Patiala for ‘Sach Da Sooraj’ in 1969. He was also awarded by UNESCO for ‘Aao Sikhiye Jiwan’ in 1970-1971 and Punjabi University, Patiala awarded him for ‘Bharati Samajik Sansthavan’ in 1972. Government of India honored him for ‘Budepe Da Sahara’ (1979) and Language Department Punjab, Patiala awarded him ‘ Shiromani Punjabi Sahitkar’ award (1982), Punjabi Sahit Akademi awarded him ‘Kartar Singh Dhaliwal’ award (1984), besides numerous other awards by literary forums.
