The study, as the title indicates, is historical in nature and is based upon the exploration of various systems of education prevailing in the pre-annexation Punjab (1707 – 1849 A.D.). The study is confined to the geographical limits representing the pre- British Punjab, including the whole of the west Punjab (areas now forming a part of the sovereign State of Pakistan) and the Indian State of Punjab, including modern states of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. The study undertakes a survey of religious, secular and military education among the Hindus, Muslims and the Sikhs, with special reference to the development of indigenous as well as modern educational systems during the period under review. The study also takes into account the patronage extended by Maharaja Ranjit Singh to the various systems of education during his rule.
